Program for designing wiring diagrams (for free?)

I should soon start assembling a wiring harness for my new engine management system. As those are expensive I’m going to share one unit with two different project cars.

Does anyone have some suggestions for a program that would be useful for designing a wiring diagrams for harnesses? The Atlas LL8/Vortec 4200 has a quite massive original harness and getting the wires mixed up is a possibility if I’m not careful. I don’t have very good documentation for the original harness so I have to reverse engineer most of it. The other engine is much more simple case.

The picture has a wiring harness for an LL8 that has been chopped up and simplified but it still uses original ECU that has been reprogrammed. So That is pretty much the minimum amount of wiring to get the engine to operate properly.

A good program would help me. Ideas? A free one would be of course my preferred choice.

LS1tech has good write ups on how to do it or some people on there will do it for a small fee

I’ve never done up a harness for anything as involved as an engine. I use the same software that I use to map out networks. Might not be a great solution for something so detailed, but worth a shot.

Whats an Atlas going into? I’ve been eyeing one as a replacement for my land cruiser engine

Best way is KISS. Just measure out where and how far apart everything is. Lay them out on a sheet of plywood with nails to run wires around at junctions. I work for a major equipment manufacture, we employ over 15000 people and with contract labor we have a work force of over well over 30000 people. Despite all those resource, we essentially build wiring harnesses the same way.

If you want simple CAD program for making schematics for reference, Visio is a great general purpose CAD program, that has some good features for electronics. Not sure if there is a free version or how much it costs, though, as I get mine for free from work.

Into a ratty ‘69 Charger. Blasphemy? Maybe but I just wanted to have a Charger with a modern straight six...

It’s a nice engine but the lack of any bolt on manual transmission is the downside of it. The problem is actually the flywheel. Even a Toyota R154 transmission will bolt behind the bell housing that is originally attached behind the engine.

A custom flywheel and a weird adapter will be my solution.

If it is suible for huge network diagrams it might work as well. The number of wires will be annoyingly high.

That might work. At least for the actual building part. Even though the modern wiring harnesses might be designed with sophisticated CAD program they are still made with very old school methods.

I have heard about Visio but I don’t remember when and why I have heard about it.

My drawing skills and handwriting is beyond terrible so even Microsoft Paint might be better than a pen for this task.

tinyCAD?

https://sourceforge.net/projects/tinyc…

it’s really more for *CIRCUIT* design than wireing diagram design, but it’s got lots of useful features that might help...

That looks somewhat useful. I have one another electronics project that could use such program too.
